Editors are necessary, especially for teen authors who are still in school or people with a reading/writing disability! Having a fresh pair of eyes from someone who knows nothing about you can be very beneficial for your book.
There are a LOT of websites that have thousands of editors, which can be very overwhelming. The places I recommend looking at are Reedsy and Fiverr. Each website is a place for freelance editors, book cover designers, and more (keep these websites in your back pocket for later).
I ended up choosing a professional from Fiverr. Both websites are useful, but the professionals from Fiverr fit my budget better.
This will probably be the biggest expense of your book, but also one of the most important! Most editors charge by the word. So, the longer your manuscript is, the more you will be charged. My manuscript is just over 40k words, and I found a wonderful professional who charged $600, but I ended up adding a little more to the story, so it’ll be closer to $700.
For my editor, I looked to see where they were from (to see if they were fluent in English) what degree they had, and where they graduated. As well as how many reviews they had and books they had worked on.
Everything depends on two things:
1) What you think is a good degree of qualification for an editor.
2) Your budget.
